I love walking my dog, and I love listening to books when I do! Reading has both a calming and educating effect, and combining this with walking my dog is one of my favorite past time activities. It took me some practise to get used to listening to audio books, but when I got the hang of it, and actually managed to focus on the narrator, it was just great. And now I don't leave the house without my earbuds.
I wouldn't recommend listening to audio books for your whole walk, but for parts of it. Your dog needs and deserves your undivided attention during your walks! See our post on What not to do when walking your dog for more tips.
Here are some dog related titles for you to try. These will help you understand your canine friend better, and you'll gets loads of tips on how to train your dog into the dog you want.
Use some great earbuds like the Jabra Elite Pro 7 for an even better experience.
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
A great read! A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope—a captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.
“The perfect book for anyone who knows that compassion isn’t only for humans, and that the relationship between two souls who are meant for each other never really comes to an end. Every now and then I’m lucky enough to read a novel I can’t stop thinking about: this is one of them.” —Jodi Picoult

Your Dog Is Your Mirror by Kevin Behan
Behan was originally trained under the dominance theory by his father, John Behan, one of the first in America to make dog training a career. But he eventually came to believe that what made the modern dog trainable was not the dominance hierarchy but the dog’s ability to work as a cooperative group member in the hunt. This ability then evolved into an emotional capacity that perfectly complements human emotion.
Behan demonstrates that dogs and humans are connected more profoundly than has ever been imagined - by heart - and that this approach to dog cognition can help us understand many of dogs’ most inscrutable behaviors. This groundbreaking, provocative book opens the door to a whole new understanding between species, and perhaps a whole new understanding of ourselves.

Scientists are beginning to understand that the chronic diseases afflicting humans - cancer, obesity, diabetes, organ degeneration, and autoimmune disorders - also beset canines. As a result, our beloved companions are vexed with preventable health problems throughout much of their lives and suffer shorter life spans. Because our pets can’t make health and lifestyle decisions for themselves, it’s up to pet parents to make smart, science-backed choices for lasting vitality and health.
